India Art

From Goa

  • Batik painting
  • Artist : Ravi

The artist uses Batik cloth as a canvas and paints with natural stone pigment. The artwork takes around 2 months to dry then the colour holds well on the cloth and will not fade out even when washed. Each work is unique as the Batik cloth absorbs the dye differently.

From Jaipur

  • Bodhi leaf art painting
  • Artist : Yogesh

The artist uses Bodhi leaves as a canvas with natural stone pigment. The leaves have to be left in water for 2 months to remove the chlorophyll, after which the leaves become transparent.

Bodhi means being awake or enlightened, so the leaves act as a symbol of the Buddha’s enlightenment.

From Jaipur

  • Vintage legal stamp paper painting
  • Artist : Vinit Marotia

The artist uses vintage legal stamp paper, ranging from 80-150 years old, that is acid free so it does not deteriorate like normal paper. Some tourist gift shops in India sell an apparently similar product however, these are non genuine made with new paper and fake stamps. The originals can only be produced by a small group of artists, whose families have worked for the Maharaja of Jaipur for several generations and are allowed to display their work inside The City Palace. The beauty of these works is in the detail as the artist uses an extremely fine paintbrush made of squirrel hair to create fine lines and shading.
